Beginning Tuesday, October 1, Maryland will roll out a new fine structure for speed camera violations, replacing the long-standing flat fee of $40 for drivers caught traveling 12 miles per hour or more above the posted speed limit.
The new graduated schedule ties fines directly to how far above the limit a driver is going:
- 12 to 15 mph over: $40
- 16 to 19 mph over: $70
- 20 to 29 mph over: $120
- 30 to 39 mph over: $230
- 40 mph or more over: $425
Montgomery County Government shared the update this week, noting that automated enforcement remains a key tool in improving roadway safety. “Starting Oct. 1, Maryland is replacing the flat $40 speed-camera fine (12+ mph over) with a graduated schedule. The faster you go, the higher the fine. Automated enforcement helps reduce crashes and keep our streets safe. Please slow down,” the County wrote in a public post.
Speed cameras are widely used throughout Montgomery County and across the state, particularly in school zones and high-risk areas. Officials hope that linking fines more closely to the severity of speeding will discourage reckless driving and further reduce crashes.
Drivers are encouraged to be mindful of their speed, especially with the new system taking effect next week.
