The Maryland Department of Natural Resources has awarded $1.5 million to the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission to support the first phase of redevelopment at RedGate Park in Rockville. The 130-acre property, once home to RedGate Golf Course, is being transformed into a public park after the course closed in 2018.
The funding will go toward the creation of new pathways and meadow areas, giving residents expanded access to open green space. The project also includes the installation of park benches, picnic tables, and educational signage to provide places for visitors to rest and learn about the local environment.
The $1.5 million grant is part of a broader investment by the state in parks and outdoor recreation projects. RedGate’s redevelopment is expected to occur in phases, with future plans calling for additional amenities such as community gardens, arboretum features, and a visitor center.
Local leaders say the project will not only expand opportunities for passive recreation but also create an important educational and ecological resource. When complete, RedGate Park is expected to become a destination for Rockville residents and the surrounding community, offering natural beauty, quiet trails, and a space to connect with the environment.
