The City of Gaithersburg has once again been recognized for its commitment to transparency and sound financial management, earning two prestigious honors from the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA).
For the 47th consecutive year, Gaithersburg received the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting, the highest form of recognition in governmental accounting and financial reporting. The award was presented for the City’s comprehensive annual financial report for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2024, which an impartial panel judged to meet GFOA’s rigorous standards. The review emphasized the City’s ability to clearly communicate its financial story and motivate residents and stakeholders to engage with the report.
The City also earned the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for the 24th consecutive year, honoring its fiscal year 2025 budget. This recognition is given to municipalities whose budgets meet nationally recognized guidelines for effectiveness as a policy document, financial plan, operations guide, and communication tool. To qualify, budget documents must be rated “proficient” across all four categories, and in 14 mandatory criteria within them.
“We are proud to once again receive these prestigious awards,” said Janice Hartman, Director of the Department of Finance and Administration. “These significant achievements reflect the commitment to transparency and excellence by dedicated City staff who work diligently to prepare an accurate and easy-to-understand budget and financial report.”
The awards were officially presented to Gaithersburg’s Department of Finance and Administration, underscoring the City’s long-standing tradition of fiscal responsibility.
The GFOA, which has more than 25,000 members across the U.S. and Canada, represents federal, state, provincial, and local finance officials who play key roles in planning, financing, and implementing governmental operations in their jurisdictions.
With nearly five decades of continuous recognition, Gaithersburg remains among a select group of municipalities nationwide demonstrating the highest standards of public financial management.
