Starbucks in Pike & Rose to Remain Open After “E-Mail Glitch” Stated Store Was Closing

Five Montgomery County Starbucks locations are shutting their doors as part of a nationwide $1 billion restructuring plan announced Thursday. The company’s “Back to Starbucks” transformation, under CEO Brian Niccol, includes the closure of certain North American coffeehouses and layoffs as it refocuses operations.

On Saturday, the Pike & Rose store at 11802 Grand Park Avenue in North Bethesda sent out the following email:

“We’ve made the very difficult decision to close the Pike and Rose – Grand Park Ave Starbucks location by the end of the day today, September 27. We know this may be hard to hear—because this isn’t just any Starbucks. It’s your coffeehouse, a place woven into your daily rhythm, where memories were made, and countless cups of coffee were enjoyed.

Our focus on creating meaningful moments for our customers remains unchanged, and we invite you to visit the Starbucks App to find your new favorite coffeehouse.

Thank you for being part of our story. We look forward to seeing you again soon.”

According to store employees, this location is not scheduled to close and the staff was told the email was not accurate and sent out by mistake.

Earlier this week, we reported the Aspen Hill location at 13677 Connecticut Avenue in the Aspen Hill Shopping Center and the Rockville/Derwood location at 8010 Gramercy Boulevard off Crabbs Branch Way would be closing. Later in the same day, we reported that additional closures were announced:

  • 898 Muddy Branch Road, Gaithersburg (Muddy Branch)
  • 1 Bethesda Metro Center, Bethesda
  • 7690 New Hampshire Avenue, Takoma Park (Hampshire Langley Shopping Center)

These closures highlight the local impact of Starbucks’ larger restructuring effort, which CNBC reports will include additional store shutdowns and staff reductions across North America.
