Did You Know Halloweentown’s Marnie (Kimberly J. Brown) is From Gaithersburg?

Every October, The MoCoShow and families across the country revisit Halloweentown, the 1998 Disney Channel Original Movie that has become a Halloween classic. With its whimsical world of witches, goblins, and magic, the film introduced audiences to Marnie Piper, a teenager who discovers her family’s supernatural heritage. What many people may not realize is that the actress behind Marnie, Kimberly J. Brown, grew up right here in Gaithersburg.

In a 2016 interview, Brown fondly recalled her childhood in Montgomery County during the 80s and early 90s. “There were certain areas near where I lived that were so serene. I love that whole country, green feel,” she shared. “Our family ritual was going to duck ponds in the area and playing with the baby chicks.” She added that she loved being able to play outside with “a bat and a ball, without worrying about where the ball lands,” something she said isn’t always possible in Los Angeles. She also mentioned that Washington is her favorite NFL team.

Brown’s acting career began at a young age, with roles on stage and screen before she became a household name. She appeared on Broadway in productions such as Les Misérables and Show Boat, and her big television break came as Marah Lewis on the daytime soap Guiding Light. By age 13, she was cast in Halloweentown, starring alongside Hollywood legend Debbie Reynolds. The film’s success led to three sequels, with Brown reprising her role in Halloweentown II: Kalabar’s Revenge and Halloweentown High.

Although she did not return for the fourth film, Return to Halloweentown, Brown’s connection to the franchise has endured. Fans continue to celebrate her portrayal of Marnie, and Brown herself remains closely tied to the series through appearances at fan conventions and her Etsy shop, CraftilyCreative, which features Halloweentown-themed merchandise.

Outside of Halloweentown, Brown has remained active in entertainment. In 2021, she joined the cast of General Hospital, marking her return to daytime television. She also found her happily ever after with her Halloweentown II co-star, Daniel Kountz, who is now her husband.

More than 25 years after its debut, Halloweentown continues to be a beloved October tradition for families, and Montgomery County residents can take special pride knowing that one of the film’s stars got her start right here in Gaithersburg.
