Game of the Week Recap: Quince Orchard Keeps Command, Downs Churchill 34–13 in Battle of the Unbeatens

In a matchup of undefeated Montgomery County powerhouses, The Cougars rolled into Potomac for a clash of unbeatens and left little doubt about who still runs Montgomery County, dispatching Churchill 34–13 in front of a packed home crowd.

For head coach John Kelley’s program, this was business as usual. The victory marked Quince Orchard’s 18th straight win, a streak dating back to last year and yet another chapter in their long-running mastery of Churchill. For Joe Rydzewski’s Bulldogs, it was a hard lesson in just how narrow the margin for error is when you’re facing Maryland’s public school juggernaut.

Quarterback Will Drakeford continues to look like one of Maryland’s top dual-threat signal callers . The Senior went supernova on both sides of the stat sheet, throwing for 134 yards and three touchdowns, adding 83 rushing yards and a score on just 11 carries. The Cougars averaged 7.3 yards per carry, wore down the Bulldog front, and leaned on their signature physicality. On defense, they turned Churchill’s usually potent run game into a non-factor, 0.3 yards per carryacross four quarters.

Still, Churchill showed fight, and wide receiver Bryan Ngouzo made sure the Bulldogs didn’t go quietly. Ngouzo hauled in 96 yards and two touchdown receptions from quarterback Hunter Humphries, who threw for 131 yards. Ngouzo also shined defensively, recording a sack, forcing a fumble, and making six tackles, a complete effort in an otherwise frustrating night for the Bulldog faithful.

When the final whistle blew, Quince Orchard stood at 5-0, looking every bit like the team to beat once again in Maryland’s 4A ranks. Churchill fell to 4-1, still among the county’s elite, but reminded how high the standard remains.

The road ahead doesn’t get easier. Next week brings another marquee matchup, as Quince Orchard hosts fellow unbeaten Sherwood (both teams allowing just 3.8 points per game) in what’s shaping up to be a defensive slugfest with statewide implications.

Churchill will aim to regroup on Thursday against Gaithersburg. But for now, the Cougars’ message to the rest of Maryland is clear: the crown still runs through Quince Orchard.
