Fashion designer Telfar Clemens, a Watkins Mill High School graduate who grew up in Gaithersburg, has teamed up with Timberland for a bold new collaboration that reimagines the brand’s iconic workwear through a fashion-forward lens. The partnership is the latest in a series of high-profile projects for Clemens, whose Telfar brand has become one of the most influential forces in modern fashion.
Born in Lefrak City, Queens in 1985 to Liberian parents, Clemens and his family briefly returned to Liberia before relocating to Gaithersburg, Maryland to escape the Second Liberian Civil War. He attended Watkins Mill High School, where his creative interests began to take shape. In a 2020 interview on NPR’s How I Built This with Guy Raz, Clemens credited his Montgomery County upbringing and early exposure to diverse communities as key influences on his inclusive design philosophy.
The Telfar × Timberland collection, released this fall, merges rugged utility with contemporary style. It features redesigned versions of Timberland’s signature 6-inch boot, including mid-height and tall pull-on boots, a minimalist slip-on loafer, and a series of bags inspired by Telfar’s famed Shopping Bag. The designs showcase premium nubuck leather, slouchy silhouettes, and sole details that nod to Timberland’s heritage craftsmanship. Wheat colorways are available through Timberland and select retailers, while black variants are exclusive to Telfar’s own channels.
Since launching his label in 2005, Clemens has redefined the fashion industry through his brand’s guiding principle: “It’s not for you, it’s for everyone.” His work has earned global recognition and a devoted following. Among his many accomplishments, Clemens designed the official uniforms for White Castle employees nationwide, blending functionality with modern streetwear aesthetics. He collaborated with musician Solange Knowles to design costumes for An Ode To, her no-phones-allowed interdisciplinary performance at the Guggenheim Museum in New York City, and announced a partnership with Gap Inc. in 2020, though the collection was postponed indefinitely due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
In November 2020, Oprah Winfrey named the Telfar Shopping Bag one of her “Favorite Things,” propelling the brand to mainstream recognition. The following year, Clemens designed the official uniforms for the Liberian Olympic team competing in the 2021 Tokyo Games, merging national pride with his signature modern style. His influence continued to grow in 2022 when Beyoncé mentioned the brand in her song “Summer Renaissance” and later wore a Telfar tracksuit during her Renaissance World Tour stop in Seattle.
Clemens’ accessible luxury line, known for its instantly recognizable Shopping Bag often called the “Bushwick Birkin,” has become a global symbol of inclusion and innovation. His collaborations with brands like UGG, Converse, and now Timberland have further cemented his reputation as a designer who bridges streetwear, culture, and high fashion.
