Lines wrapped around the block in Wheaton on Sunday, October 12, as Maryland’s first Pollo Pinulito opened to overwhelming crowds. The Guatemalan fried chicken restaurant drew hundreds of customers throughout the day, with many waiting an hour or more to try the popular chain.
Aspen Hill resident Zack T. said he waited for an hour at lunch and returned later with his daughter for dinner, where he waited another hour. “It was worth it,” he said. “I had the chicken once before in Florida and it was amazing. Just as good at the new Wheaton restaurant.”
Pollo Pinulito (2322 University Blvd W, Wheaton, MD 20902) is a Guatemalan restaurant chain known for its crispy, seasoned fried chicken and Latin American–inspired sides. The brand, which originated in Guatemala City, has earned a loyal following for its signature spice blend and freshly prepared meals. In addition to its popular fried chicken, the menu features items such as chicken sandwiches, nuggets, and fries.
The chain began expanding to the United States in recent years, opening its first American location in Dallas, Texas, in 2019. Since then, additional restaurants have opened in states including Florida and Ohio, with more planned across the country.
The Wheaton opening not only marks the Pollo Pinulito’s debut in Maryland, but also in the Mid-Atlantic region. Judging by the turnout, local diners are eager to welcome the brand.
