Wheaton High School head football coach Jermaine Howell has been named the Washington Commanders’ High School Coach of the Week. Howell, who has spent decades coaching and mentoring student-athletes in Montgomery County, was recognized for his leadership, commitment to his players, and impact on the Wheaton community.
Howell has helped guide the Wheaton Knights program through a period of steady improvement, emphasizing discipline, teamwork, and academic focus as much as performance on the field. His approach has been credited with reinvigorating school spirit and creating a culture that values both athletic and personal growth. The football team has started 5-2 this year, which is one of the best starts for the program in recent history.
The Commanders’ Coach of the Week program honors local high school coaches across the region who demonstrate exceptional dedication to their teams and communities. Each honoree is selected based on leadership, sportsmanship, and the promotion of player safety and development. Winners receive a $2,000 grant for their football program from the Washington Commanders Charitable Foundation and are recognized during the team’s season.
The award also places Howell among a select group of coaches who may later be considered for the NFL’s Don Shula Coach of the Year honor, which celebrates the top high school coach in the country. For Wheaton High School, the recognition represents a major moment of pride and a reflection of Howell’s lasting impact on the lives of his players both on and off the field.
