Community Rallies Around Student in Intensive Care After Serious Injury at Middle School

A fundraiser has been launched to support the family of the Odessa Shannon Middle School student who was seriously injured on Wednesday, October 22, during a physical education class in Silver Spring. According to his mother, Emily Diaz, the funds will help cover medical expenses and any specialized items her son may need during his recovery.

Diaz shared that her son Lenny sustained a severe open skull injury after being struck in the head by another student. Bone fragments entered his brain, and he remains in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) on a breathing tube as doctors work to stabilize him. She described Lenny as a smart, loving, and adventurous child, and said her family continues to pray for his recovery as doctors assess possible long-term effects involving his speech, mobility, and memory.

In a letter to families, Odessa Shannon Middle School Principal Dr. Natasha H. Booms confirmed that emergency protocols were immediately enacted following the incident. Emergency Medical Technicians responded on site, and the student was transported to the hospital. Counseling and support services have since been made available to students and staff affected by the incident.

Hi, my name is Emily Diaz. i’m Lenny’s mom, i’m making this to help us with funds during these difficult times me and my family are going through, we aren’t sure of medical bills yet and special items he might need on his road to recovery.
my son was struck in the head by a student in his school on 10/22 , the injury he sustained was a open skull injury and the bone fragments went into his brain. hes currently in PICU and on a breathing tube to help him breathe and recover.
my son is a very smart, loving, adventurous young boy and i feel like his life was taken even though he’s still alive. we are unsure of how he will be after recovery but the possibilities of him being impaired are there. (speech , mobility & memory) i’m praying God does his miracle in him and he recovers and comes back as he was.
