Montgomery County’s Gbenga Akinnagbe Back in the Spotlight as Nurse Jackie Finds New Life on Netflix

Montgomery County native Gbenga Akinnagbe is once again drawing national attention as Nurse Jackie has climbed into Netflix’s Top 10. The Showtime series, which originally aired from 2009 to 2015, stars Edie Falco as a brilliant but deeply flawed nurse battling addiction. Akinnagbe joined the cast in seasons 3 and 4, portraying Kelly Slater, a fellow nurse at All Saints Hospital whose presence added new layers of tension and camaraderie to the series’ ensemble.

Before his Hollywood career took off, Akinnagbe’s path looked much different. He grew up in Montgomery County and has said that he was in and out of the Mark Twain School in Rockville, an alternative school that operated under that name until 2009 for students with consistent behavioral or attendance issues. When he was eventually enrolled full-time at Magruder High School, Akinnagbe joined the wrestling team and found his footing. “Fast forward a couple of years to when I was in Magruder full-time, and I started wrestling then. I was fortunate. I was really good at it, and I was recruited Division I the next year, my senior year, to Bucknell to wrestle,” he told The Washington Post in a 2008 interview.

Akinnagbe went on to graduate from Bucknell University in 2000 with a degree in Political Science and English. After college, he took an office job in Washington DC working for the government, but soon began researching acting opportunities. When he was offered a role with the Shakespeare Theatre Company, he quit his job within a week… a decision that launched a prolific acting career.

Since then, Akinnagbe has built an impressive résumé across television and film. He earned national recognition for his breakout role as Chris Partlow in HBO’s The Wire and later appeared in Showtime’s Nurse Jackie, HBO’s The Deuce, FX’s The Old Man, STARZ’ Power Book II: Ghost, as well as in films like The Taking of Pelham 123. His work has spanned drama, comedy, and action, showcasing the same focus and discipline that once made him a standout wrestler at Magruder.

With Nurse Jackie now reintroduced to a new generation of viewers through this Netflix run, Akinnagbe’s role in the acclaimed series, and his journey from MoCo classrooms to national screens, is once again in the spotlight.
