Sherwood Surges Past Damascus, 28-7, Behind Dominant Second Half

The Sherwood Warriors continued their march toward the postseason with a statement win on Thursday night, defeating the Damascus Hornets 28-7 in a clash between two Montgomery County contenders.

Damascus struck first when quarterback Logan Romeo rolled out and launched a deep ball for a 59-yard touchdown to give the Hornets an early 7-0 lead. But that would be the last time Damascus found the end zone, as Sherwood’s defense locked in and its balanced offense took control from there.

The Warriors answered immediately behind the hard running of AJ Lopez, who broke through for a six-yard score to even the game at 7-7. Lopez later capped another strong drive with a one-yard plunge that gave Sherwood its first lead, 14-7, midway through the second quarter.

From there, the Warriors never looked back. Quarterback Matt Larsen showcased both poise and precision, connecting twice with Adrian Hamilton for touchdowns, first on a highlight-reel diving catch down the sideline, then on a 10-yard strike after rolling out to his right to extend the play.

By the time the final whistle sounded, Sherwood had scored 28 unanswered points and left little doubt about which team was in control.

With the win, Sherwood improves to 7-1 and continues to look like a legitimate 3A/4A contender. The Warriors will look to keep their momentum going when they travel to Richard Montgomery (6-2) next Thursday for another key matchup.

Damascus, now 5-3, will aim to bounce back when they host Magruder (2-6) in their regular-season home finale.
