Zara Moving Upstairs at Montgomery Mall, Taking Over Former Gap and Gap Kids Stores

Zara is preparing to relocate within Westfield Montgomery Mall in Bethesda, moving from its current space on the lower level of the Nordstrom wing to the upper level, where it will take over the former Gap and Gap Kids space.

The move keeps the international fashion retailer in one of the mall’s most high-traffic areas and is expected to give Zara a larger, updated store footprint designed to better showcase its men’s, women’s, and children’s collections.

Gap and Gap Kids closed permanently in July after a multi-decade run at the mall. Both brands had long been staples of the shopping center, drawing families and everyday shoppers for more than 20 years. The closures reflect a broader national trend for Gap Inc., which has been consolidating locations in favor of higher-performing sites and online operations. The company continues to operate additional Montgomery County locations, including stores at Clarksburg Premium Outlets, Pike & Rose in North Bethesda, and The Collection at Chevy Chase.

Zara’s move is part of the brand’s continued investment in premium mall locations. Founded in Spain in 1974, Zara is one of the world’s largest international fashion retailers and part of the Inditex Group. The brand is known for its fast-fashion model, frequently updating collections to reflect current trends and offering stylish apparel at accessible prices. With thousands of locations worldwide, Zara’s in-store experience emphasizes modern design, frequent new arrivals, and the integration of online and in-person shopping.

Construction for Zara’s new upper-level space is already underway, with the new store expected to open later this by the end of the year, according to an employee. Zara will continue to operate at its current location until the new store is ready to open.
