Nan Xiang Soup Dumplings, the Michelin-recommended restaurant known for its authentic Shanghai-style xiao long bao, held its grand opening celebration on Tuesday, October 28th at Westfield Montgomery Mall in Bethesda.
The celebration followed a soft opening period that began about a month ago. Employees tell us the restaurant has been consistently busy since day one, drawing strong crowds for its acclaimed soup dumplings and traditional dim sum menu. Tuesday’s grand opening featured complimentary food and drink, a ribbon-cutting ceremony, cooking demonstrations, and cultural performances (photos below).
Founded in Flushing, New York, in 2006, Nan Xiang has earned Michelin recommendations for nine consecutive years for its commitment to authentic Shanghai flavors. The new Bethesda location marks another milestone in the brand’s expansion, offering a full-service dining experience from 11am to 10pm daily.
Nan Xiang’s signature xiao long bao (soup dumplings) come in a variety of flavors, including pork, crab meat, chicken, truffle, scallop, abalone, and vegetable, with the “Lucky Six” basket offering one of each. The menu also features a wide range of dim sum and noodle dishes, such as pan-fried pork buns, shrimp potstickers, siu mai, braised beef noodle soup, seafood stir-fried udon, and pork chop noodle soup.
Chef’s specials include Shanghai-style sweet and sour spare ribs, black pepper beef, creamy shrimp, and crispy flounder fillet, alongside an all-day breakfast menu with hot and cold soybean milk, scallion pancakes, crispy dough sticks, and assorted sweet pastries like durian puffs and red bean puffs.
Nan Xiang Soup Dumplings is located on the lower level of Westfield Montgomery Mall (7101 Democracy Blvd., Suite 2350). The brand previously operated an “express” location in Ellicott City, which is no longer in business.
