Overturned Truck Shuts Down Portion of Northbound I-270 Saturday Morning

A serious crash involving a trash truck shut down all local lanes of northbound I-270 between Falls Road and Shady Grove Road on Saturday morning, according to Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) spokesperson Pete Piringer.

The collision, which was first reported around 8:30 a.m., involved a tractor trailer that flipped over the median wall just before the Shady Grove Road exit. Fire and rescue crews from Rockville, Gaithersburg, and surrounding stations, including A732, T731, PE732, SA700, PRS729, EMS703, PE726, M725, and HM728, responded to the scene.

Piringer later confirmed that the incident involved two vehicles, including a trash truck, with one person trapped and two others who were able to self-rescue. A fuel spill was also reported, and MCFRS HazMat teams were called in to assist with cleanup efforts. Piringer stated that crews extricated the driver of a trash truck, who was transported as a Priority 1 trauma with life-threatening injuries. A second patient from the passenger vehicle was transported with non-life-threatening injuries.

Montgomery County Police issued a traffic advisory around 9:15 a.m., stating that all northbound local lanes of I-270 between Falls Road and Shady Grove Road were closed. Drivers were urged to seek alternate routes and expect significant delays through the morning. As of late morning, emergency crews remained on the scene working to clear the vehicles and address the fuel spill.
