Takoma Park Police Collect 388 Pounds of Medication During Nationwide Prescription Drug Take-Back Day

The Takoma Park Police Department collected nearly 400 pounds of unused and expired medications during the Nationwide Prescription Drug Take-Back Day on October 25, 2025.

According to Police Chief Antonio DeVaul, officers delivered 388 pounds of medication to the DEA drop-off site. Of that total, 366 pounds were collected directly by Takoma Park Police, with an additional 22 pounds contributed by Montgomery College, a longtime community partner in the initiative.

Chief DeVaul thanked everyone who participated, noting that the event plays a crucial role in preventing pill abuse and theft by helping residents safely dispose of unwanted prescription drugs. “Thank you to Montgomery College for their valuable partnership, and to the men and women of the Takoma Park Police Department who run this campaign each year,” he said.

Residents who missed the Take-Back event can still safely dispose of medications year-round at the Takoma Park Police Department, located at 7500 Maple Avenue (1st Floor Lobby). The permanent green Med-Return drop box is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and accepts prescription and non-prescription drugs, patches, ointments, vitamins, and pet medications, no questions asked.

Not accepted items include liquids, inhalers, aerosol cans, household ointments or lotions, needles/sharps, and thermometers. Vape pens and e-cigarette devices are accepted only if the batteries have been removed. Collected items are securely stored and disposed of through proper environmental and safety practices.
