Remembering Seibel’s in Burtonsville, Which Closed Four Years Ago This Month After 82 Years in Business

This month marks four years since Seibel’s Family Restaurant at 15540 Old Columbia Pike in Burtonsville closed its doors, ending more than 82 years of serving the community. The longtime local favorite, which officially closed on Sunday, November 28, 2021, was known for its homestyle meals like prime rib and meatloaf, but perhaps most famously for its homemade ice cream and fresh baked pies that drew loyal customers from across the region.

Founded in 1939, Seibel’s became a cherished gathering place known for comfort food, warm hospitality, and family tradition. Though it has now been closed for four years, the restaurant remains fondly remembered by generations of Montgomery County residents. The closure was announced in a heartfelt letter from the Seibel family, who had operated the restaurant since the 1960s. In the message, they reflected on decades of memories, the challenges of the pandemic, and their gratitude for the loyal customers and employees who made Seibel’s a true Burtonsville institution.

“After much consideration, we have made the decision to start a new chapter,” the letter read. “Sunday, November 28, will be the final day we turn on the burners and open our doors.”

Today, the former Seibel’s space is home to Restaurant 198, a concept described as “the intersection of food and community.” Offering a Nuevo American menu with creative “American-ish” flavors, unique cocktails, and a lively, neighborhood atmosphere, the restaurant is operated by Centrado Food Group, a family-owned company that emphasizes local sourcing and collaboration with community vendors, musicians, and artists, continuing the spirit of connection that Seibel’s embodied for more than eight decades.
