One of Maryland’s Most Unique Winter Lights Displays Returns Next Week

One of the region’s most unique and beloved winter traditions is returning to Downtown Frederick. Visit Frederick has announced that Sailing Through the Winter Solstice will set sail once again in Carroll Creek Park beginning Saturday, November 22, bringing months of floating light displays to the heart of the city (video below).

Launch Day invites visitors downtown to watch the 2025-26 winter fleet assemble on the water, complete with Frederick’s signature holiday spirit. Each illuminated boat is individually designed and sponsored by a local business or organization, and the annual event doubles as a major fundraiser for Frederick County nonprofits. Last year’s fleet raised more than $140,000 for local charities, according to Visit Frederick.

The 2025-26 installation runs from November 2025 through March 2026 and is open for viewing 24 hours a day. Visitors are encouraged to stop by both during daylight and after sunset for two very different experiences. The boats’ colors and craftsmanship can be seen clearly during the day, while the full lighting display comes to life each evening when the lights switch on at sunset.

The event is organized by Color On The Creek, the local nonprofit known for maintaining the vibrant water lilies that float on Carroll Creek throughout the summer. The group works year-round to transform the waterway into one of Frederick’s most photographed spots during both warm and cold months.
