Blake High School Teacher Nicole Murray-Lewis Elected to Maryland State Board of Education

Nicole Murray-Lewis, a longtime Montgomery County Public Schools educator, has been elected to serve as the teacher member on the Maryland State Board of Education. Murray-Lewis, who currently teaches social studies at James H. Blake High School, received 39.9 percent of the 3,624 votes cast in the statewide election held November 3-17.

A veteran educator with 28 years of experience, Murray-Lewis spent 24 years at Gaithersburg High School before joining Blake, and previously taught for four years in the East Baton Rouge Parish School System. She earned her National Board Certification in 2008, a distinction held by fewer than 3 percent of teachers nationwide.

Eligible voters included educators across Maryland holding active state teaching certificates or licenses as of October 10, 2025. The full election results have been published online. Murray-Lewis’ appointment will now be forwarded to Governor Wes Moore and is subject to confirmation by the Maryland State Senate.
