Every year before winter, MoCoSnow looks at the seasonal outlooks released by the major TV networks in our area, and ABC7 has now shared its forecast for the upcoming season. The headline this year: a near-normal winter with 10-20 inches of snow expected for most of the immediate region.
Most of Montgomery County, D.C., and Prince George’s County land in the 10–20 inch zone, broken down even further as:
- 10–15” for southern/eastern MoCo, D.C., and PG County
- 15–20” for northern and western MoCo, Frederick County, and the foothills
This setup points to a winter that starts slow, then picks up in the middle, with the potential for a little extra activity late in the season.
ABC7 notes that the region is heading into a slightly milder-than-normal La Niña winter, which often brings a mix of mild stretches, colder bursts, and fewer classic coastal storms. A La Niña jet stream also favors more northern storm tracks, meaning more rain/mix events and fewer all-snow systems, but still enough cold snaps to bring a few shovel-worthy storms.
What It Means for MoCo:
- Not a big winter, but not a quiet one
- Several plowable snow events are likely
- January remains the strongest month for snow chances
- February could deliver a last-minute push if conditions shift
- Expect variability, mild days mixed with sudden winter blasts
