MLK Middle School’s John Glodek Named SHAPE Maryland’s Middle School Physical Educator of the Year

Montgomery County Government recently shared on social media that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School’s own John Glodek has been named Middle School Physical Educator of the Year by the Society of Health and Physical Educators Maryland (SHAPE MD).

According to MCPS, the honor was announced during the annual SHAPE Maryland Convention, held Nov. 15 in Ocean City with this year’s theme, “Making Waves in Health & PE.” The recognition celebrates educators who are transforming health and physical education across the state.

MCPS shared that Glodek has taught P.E. at MLK since 2002 and was recognized for his innovative approach to physical education, most notably his Riding for Focus cycling program. Funded by a grant from Outride, the class brings structured cycling into the school day, giving students the chance to build functional skills, confidence, and community.

Montgomery County government highlighted the impact of the program, noting that Glodek’s work is helping students grow both physically and emotionally through a unique, movement-centered experience. Additional information can be found here.
