Driver Uses Infant as Hostage Following Wrong-Way Collision on I-270

The Frederick County Sheriff’s Office (FCSO) has announced the arrest of Cory Thomas Burkhardt, 37, of Idlewylde, Maryland, following a lengthy vehicle pursuit that began in Frederick County and continued into Montgomery County. Additional information can be found here.

An incident shut down I-270 on Friday afternoon and into the evening after a collision forced the closure of all lanes at MD 121 (Clarksburg Road).

According to reporting from ABC7, the crash stemmed from a police pursuit that began in Frederick. The driver reportedly traveled south in the northbound lanes of I-270 for several miles with children inside the vehicle. Officials say that after the crash, the man exited the car while holding an infant and used the child as a hostage. The suspect was zapped with a taser and taken into custody and the child was not hurt.

Per the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office: “Deputies were involved in a vehicle pursuit that began on Route 15 in Frederick County after the driver was observed traveling southbound in the northbound lanes. The pursuit continued into Montgomery County, ending on I-270. The occupants of the vehicle have been detained and there is no further threat to the community.”
