Update: Man Arrested and Charged After Wrong-Way Chase From Frederick to Montgomery County

The Frederick County Sheriff’s Office (FCSO) has announced the arrest of Cory Thomas Burkhardt, 37, of Idlewylde, Maryland, following a lengthy vehicle pursuit that began in Frederick County and continued into Montgomery County.

According to FCSO, “The incident began on Friday, November 21, 2025, at approximately 4:00 PM when a FCSO deputy observed a vehicle traveling southbound on U.S. Route 15 near Rosemont Avenue operating recklessly. The vehicle crossed the median and continued southbound in the northbound lanes of Route 15, creating an immediate threat to the oncoming motorist.

As deputies attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver—later identified as Burkhardt—continued to flee and made several attempts to strike Sheriff’s Office vehicles and deputies. Spike strips were deployed twice, but the vehicle continued to evade law enforcement, entering southbound I-270 while still traveling in the northbound lanes.

Near the Clarksburg exit on I-270, a deputy used their police vehicle to force the suspect’s vehicle into a guardrail, bringing it to a controlled stop, ending the pursuit.

Once stopped, Burkhardt initially refused to exit the vehicle. Deputies used non-lethal weapons to gain compliance, and two children, ages 8 and 12, exited the vehicle first. Burkhardt then exited while carrying a third child, approximately 2 years old, and fled on foot while acting in a manner suggesting he was armed. A Taser deployment allowed deputies to safely secure the child. Burkhardt continued to resist arrest, including attempting to disarm a deputy. After additional non-lethal measures, he was taken into custody.

Burkhard was transported to Frederick Health Hospital for an emergency evaluation while deputies were securing charges against him. During this process, before charges were completed, Burkhardt forced his way out of the hospital, fleeing on foot. Burkhard was apprehended by Frederick Police Officers shortly thereafter and transported back to Frederick Health Hospital.

The following charges have been placed against Burkhardt:

-Two counts of First-Degree Assault

-Four counts of Second-Degree Assault

-Disarming a Law Enforcement Officer

-Attempt by Driver to Elude a Uniformed Police Officer by Failing to Stop

-Attempt by Driver to Elude Police in an Official Police Vehicle by Failing to Stop

-Reckless Driving

-Negligent Driving a Vehicle in a Careless and Imprudent Manner Endangering Property, Life, and Person

-Failure to Drive on the Right-Hand Roadway of a Divided Highway

-Driving on the Median Strip of a Divided Highway

-Failing to Secure a Child Under Two Years Old in a Rear-Facing Child Safety Seat that Complies with Federal Regulations

-Willfully Disobeying the Lawful Order or Direction of a Police Officer

There were no serious injuries to deputies, the children, or members of the public. FCSO was assisted by Maryland State Police- Frederick Barrack and the Montgomery County Police Department and Frederick City Police.”
