Metro Rolls Out New Bike Lockers as Part of Systemwide Upgrade

Metro has officially launched the first phase of its revamped bike parking program, introducing new app-based bike lockers now available at the Foggy Bottom and Eastern Market Metrorail stations. The rollout marks the beginning of a multi-year upgrade aimed at making bike-to-rail travel easier, safer, and more convenient for riders across the region.

Cyclists can rent the new lockers through the BikeLink app, available on the Apple App Store and Google Play. The app allows users to check real-time availability, view pricing, and open lockers directly from their phones. Lockers cost 5 cents an hour, capped at one dollar a day. When Metro’s new smart self-locking racks debut later on, reservations will be free, with a credit card required only for verification.

Over the next several months, Metro will install 450 standard bike lockers, 50 oversized cargo bike lockers, and 100 self-locking bike racks at 73 rail stations across the region. The upgrade will also include 75 bike repair stations and 600 new u-racks. Metro plans to update its bike parking webpage as additional stations and equipment come online through 2027.

The program reflects Metro’s renewed commitment to improving station access for all customers, whether they arrive by foot, bus, car, or bike. By offering safe and secure storage options, Metro aims to extend the reach of the rail system and encourage more riders to choose biking as part of their commute.

The new equipment replaces Metro’s previous annual rental system, which relied on physical keys. With online reservations and flexible hourly pricing, the updated model is designed to be more accessible, affordable, and user-friendly.

Metro evaluated multiple storage solutions last year and incorporated customer feedback before selecting the following options:

• Standard Single Locker: Fits one regular-sized bike

• Standard Double-Sided Locker: Same dimensions as the single, divided for two bikes

• Oversized Locker: Accommodates cargo bikes such as the Bunch Bike, RadWagon, and Urban Arrow

• Self-locking Bicycle Rack: Secures a bike at both wheels and the frame without needing a personal lock

Customers can also continue using Bike & Ride rooms at stations including College Park–U of Md, East Falls Church, Grosvenor–Strathmore, Potomac Yard, and Vienna.

Metro will share ongoing updates as the expanded system rolls out across the region. For assistance, customers can contact the BikeLink Support Line at 888-540-0546. Support is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
