Construction Nears Completion at Greenbriar Local Park Following May 2024 Fire
Construction at Greenbriar Local Park in Potomac is now nearing completion, roughly a year and a half after a fire caused an estimated $1 million in damage and forced the closure of the park’s large playground. The rebuilt playground structure appears nearly finished, though the walkway leading to it remains fenced off as work continues.
The playground at 12525 Glen Road has been closed since the May 2024 blaze, which destroyed much of the equipment and halted regular use of one of the park’s most popular attractions. Montgomery Parks began reconstruction in mid-November and initially expected work to carry into winter, but progress has moved ahead faster than anticipated.
The small playground and the rest of the park have remained open throughout the project, giving visitors continued access while major repairs took place.
When the fire occurred, Montgomery Parks director Miti Figueredo emphasized the setback felt across the community. “We put a lot of effort into creating a safe and enjoyable space for the community, and it’s so sad to see it destroyed,” Figueredo said in May 2024. “Now, instead of moving forward with other projects, we have to prioritize replacing what was lost. It’s a setback for the whole community.”
While the majority of construction now appears complete, Montgomery Parks has not yet provided an updated reopening date for the large playground. Crews are still working in the fenced-off walkway area, which must be finished before the space can reopen to the public.
Park Police continue to seek information related to the May 2024 fire. Anyone with knowledge that could assist the investigation is encouraged to contact the Fire and Explosives Investigations Office at 240-777-2269 or [email protected].
