Police Share Black Friday Safety Tips Ahead of Busy Holiday Weekend

As shoppers prepare for one of the busiest retail days of the year, the Gaithersburg Police Department has released a list of Black Friday safety tips to help keep the community safe both in stores and in parking lots.

The department encourages anyone heading out for early-morning deals or late-night shopping runs to take a few simple precautions that can make a major difference during crowded conditions.

Shoppers are urged to plan ahead, anticipating heavy traffic, long lines, and potential delays. Police also remind drivers and pedestrians to stay alert, obey all traffic signs, watch carefully for pedestrians, and be mindful of your surroundings when walking to and from your vehicle.

Patience is also key. “Be patient” is one of the department’s highlighted reminders, as large crowds and limited parking can lead to frustration. Officers stress that keeping calm helps prevent accidents and conflicts. Residents are also asked to avoid certain behaviors that can put them at risk.

Police advise shoppers not to carry large amounts of cash, and to keep a record of credit cards and important phone numbers in case they are lost or stolen. They also caution against rushing, noting that hurrying through crowded parking lots or stores increases the chance of injury. Additionally, shoppers are encouraged not to shop alone, and instead head out with a friend whenever possible.

“Let’s keep the holiday spirit bright and safe,” Gaithersburg Police said in their announcement. For assistance, residents can contact 301-279-8000 for non-emergencies or 911 for emergencies.
