Sports Card Show Offering Early Entry For Kids With Sensory Needs This Saturday, 11/29

The Mid-Atlantic Sports Card Show, the largest inside the Beltway, is making room for a quieter start to the hobby’s busiest day. The show,  which also features a large selection of Pokémon cards, returns to the Silver Spring Civic Center this Saturday, 11/29 from 10am to 3pm. Early admission begins at 9am, but founders Ryan and Mariana McCormick have added a special 8:30am entry time for children with sensory needs.

“This is a quieter, calmer time to go to the card show without the crowds or noise that can be overstimulating or frightening for many children who are diagnosed with autism,” Mariana said. “I was a teacher for close to twenty-five years, and I really wanted to make sure all children had the opportunity to participate. I know how loud and crowded the rooms can become during the day, and it can be overwhelming. With early entrance, we can create an inviting environment for all children who love The Hobby.”

Families who would benefit from the sensory-friendly time slot can simply arrive at 8:30am. The show features more than 150 tables filled with memorabilia, packs, cards, and toys, and it’s known to be packed from the moment doors open. While the crowd traditionally skews toward middle-aged men, the McCormicks say they’re seeing a growing number of younger collectors and a more diverse audience.

The format is clearly resonating. The Mid-Atlantic Sports Card Show will hold its first two-day event the weekend before the Super Bowl, followed by three additional shows next year.
