Light Up the Lakefront Returns to Rio This Saturday With Music, Fireworks, and Festive Fun

Light Up the Lakefront is back at Rio in Gaithersburg this Saturday, December 6, bringing one of the area’s most popular holiday traditions to the waterfront. HOT 99.5’s Intern John, and The MoCoShow’s own “Mr. MoCo,” Alex Tsironis, will once again take the stage to host the event from 4:00pm to 7:00pm. The free celebration promises an evening packed with lights, music, entertainment, and a fireworks finale over the lake (video of last year’s event below).

This year’s event will span two festive hubs: the Boardwalk near Guapo’s and Charley Prime Foods, and the Fire Lounge between True Food Kitchen and Uncle Julio’s. At the Boardwalk Stage, guests can expect DJ sets and live music from HOT 99.5, while 97.1 WASH-FM will bring holiday favorites to the Fire Lounge.

Sportrock’s Headlamp Glow Climb returns as one of the event’s signature attractions, alongside holiday photo ops, roaming performers, giveaways, and seasonal sips and bites from Rio’s lineup of restaurants.

Guests will also have a chance to score tickets to HOT 99.5’s Jingle Ball, plus a VIP prize package that includes reserved seating for four on Charley’s Patio, refreshments, glow climb access, and reserved parking. To enter, text LIGHT to 301-750-1289 (one entry per person, 21+). Entries close at midnight on December 1.

The night wraps up with a 6:45pm fireworks show that will illuminate the lakefront. Visitors are encouraged to arrive early and use the free garages near Kohl’s and Target. As in past years, portions of the lake path and playground will temporarily close for safety ahead of the fireworks.
