Clarksburg’s K.C. Landefeld Named Maryland Flag Football Coach of the Year by Washington Commanders

Clarksburg Coyotes head coach K.C. Landefeld was recognized Sunday night by the Washington Commanders as the Maryland Flag Football Coach of the Year, an honor celebrating his leadership, player development, and the sustained excellence of the Coyotes’ girls flag football program.

The award comes during a period of rapid growth for girls flag football across Maryland. A total of 92 high schools participated in the 2025 season, representing seven counties: Baltimore City, Calvert, Charles, Frederick, Montgomery, Prince George’s, and Washington. The sport’s expansion has been matched by Clarksburg’s rise to powerhouse status under Landefeld’s guidance.

Clarksburg entered the postseason as the No. 2 seed in the 4A/3A state bracket and advanced to the championship game by defeating No. 3 Western. In the other semifinal, Whitman upset top-seeded Wise to set up an all-Montgomery County final. The Coyotes then shut out Whitman 19-0 to secure their second consecutive state title.

The dominance has been building for more than a year. After dropping their first game of the 2024 season, Clarksburg has not lost since. Landefeld’s coaching style and commitment to player development were highlighted earlier this season in a Week 3 feature on Commanders.com, which praised both his structure and his connection with athletes:

“Through his well-structured practices, he taught proper footwork, knowledge of the game, designed drills for girls to improve skills, created plays, designed the defense, and led team building activities to promote positive relationships between players. During lunch, Coach Landefeld provided snacks and watched film with the players. He taught the girls football academic language, including position names, how to run routes, and how to read defenses. He has high expectations but leads with a calm demeanor. He is also reflective. He is able to adjust when needed and adapt. Coach Landefeld is building a program, not just coaching a team.”

An educator for 34 years, Landefeld told the Commanders he jumped at the opportunity to coach girls flag football because of his love for the game and the challenge of helping build a new varsity sport in Maryland. His approach has transformed Clarksburg into one of the premier programs in the state, and Sunday night’s recognition reflects the growing statewide appreciation for his impact.
