Winter Weather Advisory Expanded to Include Much of the DC Region

The National Weather Service has expanded its Winter Weather Advisory to include the District of Columbia, central Maryland (including all of Montgomery County), and portions of northern Virginia, warning that a mix of light snow and very cold temperatures will create treacherous travel conditions early Friday. The advisory is in effect from 4 a.m. to 4 p.m., with the Friday morning commute expected to be significantly impacted.

Forecasters say snowfall totals will hover near one inch across the advisory area, but even light accumulation will be enough to create slick and icy roads due to temperatures remaining in the 20s. Snow is expected to overspread the region before daybreak, with slightly higher amounts possible in any narrow banding that develops. As the snow tapers off midday, a period of light freezing drizzle may follow into the afternoon, adding to travel concerns.

The Weather Service urges drivers to slow down and use caution, noting that untreated roads, sidewalks, and parking lots will become slippery quickly. The cold ground temperatures will allow snow to stick on contact, even with minimal accumulation.

We’ll be back later this evening with potential impact on schools.
