The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for freezing drizzle between 7pm tonight-1am Saturday east of US-15 & along the I-95 corridor. A light glaze of ice is expected for Washington, D.C., along with large portions of central, northern, and southern Maryland, and central and northern Virginia.
Forecasters warn that a light glaze of ice is likely on sidewalks, roads, and bridges, making travel slippery late this evening and into the early overnight hours. Fog and periods of freezing drizzle will further reduce visibility and worsen conditions.
NWS notes that temperatures will fall back into the 20s tonight, allowing any melted snow or slush from earlier in the day to refreeze, adding another layer of concern for drivers and pedestrians.
Residents are urged to use caution, allow extra time if traveling, and monitor road conditions through their state’s 511 system. Even small amounts of icing can make untreated surfaces dangerous in a short period of time.
The advisory includes areas across the District of Columbia, Southern Baltimore, Prince George’s, Anne Arundel, Charles, St. Mary’s, Calvert, Northwest and Central/Southeast Montgomery, Howard County, and parts of Northern Virginia including Fairfax, Arlington, Loudoun, Stafford, and Prince William counties.
Conditions are expected to improve gradually after midnight as the precipitation diminishes, but temperatures will remain below freezing into early Saturday morning.
