South Germantown Adventure Playground Closes for Major Renovation; Reopening Planned for Summer 2026

Montgomery Parks has begun a major renovation of the South Germantown Adventure Playground, which officially began construction on December 1, 2025, according to the Montgomery Parks website. The extensive project will modernize and reimagine one of Montgomery County’s most popular family destinations, with a scheduled reopening in summer 2026.

Located at 17920 Germantown Park Drive in Boyds, the 7-acre playground has been a regional favorite for more than two decades, drawing families, school groups, and visitors from throughout the DC area. Built in 2003 as the largest and most unique playground in the county, it originally featured five themed play zones designed to challenge both the minds and physical skills of young visitors. After more than 20 years of heavy use, however, the structures and amenities are showing their age, making a full renovation necessary.

The upgraded Adventure Playground will introduce inclusive, high-performance play areas designed for children of all ages and ability levels. Plans call for nature-based elements, intergenerational play opportunities, and new spaces for learning, socializing, and creative exploration. In addition to revamped play structures, the project includes accessible walkways, multi-purpose terraces, open areas, expanded picnic spaces, a game and workout zone, new site furnishings, improved shade, updated signage, stormwater management features, and landscape enhancements using native plants.

Montgomery Parks notes that bathrooms and about two-thirds of the parking lot will remain open during construction. Visitors are encouraged to use caution around the work zone. The redesign will maintain the playground’s familiar loop-style layout, which helps families easily move between play areas while maximizing efficiency and adaptability for future updates. The renovation also requires careful planning because the site sits within an environmentally sensitive watershed.

The South Germantown Adventure Playground is part of the 695-acre South Germantown Recreational Park, one of the county’s largest and most varied recreation destinations. Even within such a large park, the playground has long stood out for its themed climbing structures, maze, slides, swings, musical play components, paved play zones, and shaded areas for families. Although it has served the community well since 2003, its features have become outdated and worn, prompting this long-anticipated overhaul.

When the playground reopens in summer 2026, Montgomery Parks expects it to offer a fully refreshed experience, more accessible, more engaging, and better equipped to serve the next generation of families across Montgomery County and beyond.
