A Winter Weather Advisory is now in effect for the District of Columbia and much of central and northern Maryland, including Montgomery County, as well as parts of northern Virginia, with snow expected overnight into early Sunday morning.
According to the National Weather Service, the advisory runs from 8 pm Saturday evening through 7 am Sunday. Snowfall totals of 1 to 3 inches are expected across most of the advisory area, with localized totals of 4 to 5 inches possible, particularly in Baltimore and northeastern Maryland.
The advisory covers Washington DC, Carroll, Northern Baltimore, Cecil, Southern Baltimore, Prince George’s, Anne Arundel, Montgomery, Howard, and Harford counties in Maryland, along with Fairfax County, Arlington, Falls Church, and Alexandria in Virginia.
Forecasters say precipitation may begin as rain in some locations Saturday evening, but colder air moving in quickly will cause a changeover to snow. A narrow band of heavier snow could develop late in the evening and overnight, leading to brief periods of faster accumulation and reduced visibility to less than one half mile.
Road conditions are expected to become slippery, especially overnight and during the early Sunday morning hours. Drivers are urged to slow down, allow extra travel time, and use caution if heading out during the advisory period.
The National Weather Service recommends checking the latest road conditions by calling 511 for state-specific travel updates.
