Our Lady of Good Counsel High School has named Sal Gorgone as its new head football coach, ushering in a new chapter for one of the nation’s most recognizable high school football programs while maintaining continuity within the Falcon Football tradition.
Gorgone is deeply rooted in the Good Counsel football program, having spent the past 16 years on the coaching staff. His promotion reflects the school’s emphasis on stability, long-term development, and sustaining a program known nationally for competitive success and character formation.
Gorgone has coached at every level of the program during his tenure, beginning as the freshman linebackers coach for five years before serving as freshman defensive coordinator and JV defensive coordinator. Since 2017, he has been the varsity defensive coordinator and assistant head coach. During that stretch, Good Counsel advanced to four championship games in 2019, 2021, 2023, and 2024, winning WCAC titles in 2019 and 2023.
“I am very excited to lead the program at Good Counsel, which has a great tradition,” Gorgone said. “My philosophy is to pursue athletic excellence, academic accountability, the development of young men’s character, and personal growth.”
Known for his detail-oriented approach and emphasis on mentorship, Gorgone has built a reputation for developing student-athletes both on and off the field. School leadership noted that his vision closely aligns with the values and systems that have defined Good Counsel football for decades.
The school also acknowledged the service of alumnus Andy Stefanelli ’83, who previously led the program. Administrators thanked Stefanelli for his dedication and leadership, noting his strong connection to the school and its athletic tradition, and wished him well in his future endeavors.
Gorgone is scheduled to meet with the entire football program Monday afternoon in the Performing Arts Center and will begin connecting with families and staff in the coming weeks to ensure a smooth transition.
The announcement was signed by Principal Edward Owusu ’89 and Athletic Director Steve Howes ’91, who expressed confidence in the direction of the program as Good Counsel continues building on the foundation of Falcon Football.
