Montgomery County Public Schools has begun rolling out a new color-coded employee badge system, a change the district says is designed to improve safety and speed identification during emergencies.
In its recent staff bulletin, MCPS explained that the redesigned badges are intentional and focused on one goal: allowing school staff, administrators, and first responders to quickly identify who is in a building and what role they serve. District officials emphasized that in emergency situations, even a few seconds can make a difference, and clear visual cues can help reduce confusion.
Under the new system, badges are color-coded by role. Blue badges identify administrators, school leaders, and Central Services administrators. Red badges are assigned to educators. Purple badges designate support professionals, while yellow badges are worn by security staff. White badges are used for contractors and volunteers.
MCPS said the system is meant to provide instant visual clarity during both routine school days and serious incidents. By making roles easily recognizable at a glance, the district says it can better support coordinated responses from school leaders, staff, and emergency personnel.
The district noted that the color-coding applies across all MCPS buildings and is part of broader efforts to strengthen safety protocols systemwide.
