Police Warn of QR Code Sticker Scams in Public Places

Police are warning residents about a growing scam involving fake QR code stickers placed in public spaces, designed to trick people into giving up personal information or money.

QR codes have become a common and convenient way to pay for parking, access menus, or get information, but scammers are increasingly exploiting that familiarity. According to Takoma Park police, criminals may place fake QR code stickers over legitimate ones on parking meters, ATMs, kiosks, or other public fixtures. When scanned, those codes can lead users to fraudulent websites that appear legitimate but are designed to steal sensitive information.

Police are encouraging residents to take a moment to inspect QR codes before scanning, especially in public places. If a code looks like a sticker placed over another code or seems out of place, it could be a red flag. Verifying the source is also important. If you’re unsure whether a QR code is legitimate, visiting the business or organization’s official website directly is a safer option.

Another key warning is to avoid sharing personal or financial information after scanning a QR code. Legitimate QR codes should not ask for banking details, passwords, or other sensitive information. If a site prompts that type of request, it’s likely a scam.

Takoma Park police also recommend using trusted QR code scanner apps, some of which can warn users if a link appears suspicious or malicious. Anyone who encounters a questionable QR code is encouraged to report it to local authorities or the business involved so it can be removed and investigated.

For more information, police suggest reviewing guidance from the Federal Trade Commission, including its consumer alert titled “Scammers Hide Harmful Links in QR Codes to Steal Your Information,” as well as resources from the Better Business Bureau.

Officials say staying alert and sharing this information with friends and family can help prevent others from becoming victims of these scams.
