The Independent Investigations Division (IID) of the Maryland Office of the Attorney General is investigating a death involving an individual who suffered a fatal medical crisis after being released from police custody in Montgomery County. Details remain limited at this time.
According to the press release that includes the preliminary information released by IID, Montgomery County police officers responded to a 911 call around 8:30pm on December 15, 2025, for a person reported to be experiencing a mental health episode. Officers encountered an individual matching the description provided by the caller, placed him in restraints, and took him into custody for an emergency evaluation.
The individual was transported to a hospital by Montgomery County Emergency Medical Services. Approximately two hours after being admitted, the individual experienced a medical crisis. He later died on December 22, 2025.
Following the death, the Independent Investigations Division assumed responsibility for investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. IID is currently working to gather additional information and has not released the name of the decedent or any involved officers.
Under standard protocol, IID generally releases the names of the decedent and involved officers within two business days, though that timeline can be extended if additional investigative steps are required. IID stated that, due to the need to gather more information, the release of names in this case will be delayed.
IID also noted that body-worn camera footage is typically released within 20 business days of an incident. However, that timeframe may be extended in certain situations, including when investigators need more time to complete witness interviews, address technical issues related to protecting civilian identities, or allow family members to view the footage prior to public release.
Anyone with information related to this investigation is encouraged to contact the Independent Investigations Division at 410-576-7070 or by email at [email protected]. This is a developing situation, and updates will be shared as more information becomes available.
