Nearly 50 vehicles were broken into overnight in Ellicott City and Columbia, prompting a large police response that ultimately ended with suspects on the run and a high-tech search involving a drone and thermal imaging.
According to Howard County Police, the break-ins occurred across multiple locations late at night, with suspects targeting dozens of parked cars. Investigators say the suspects were operating out of a stolen vehicle and fled when officers attempted to stop them.
The video shows patrol officers were able to track the suspects that same night using a department drone equipped with a thermal camera. Video released by Howard County Police shows officers monitoring heat signatures from above as the suspects attempted to evade capture on foot.
The aerial technology allowed officers to maintain visual contact even in dark and wooded areas, significantly narrowing the search area and helping ground units move in. The video can be seen below:
