Chip City Permanently Closes Its Only Maryland Location

Chip City has permanently closed its Bethesda location, marking the end of the New York- based cookie chain’s only Maryland outpost.

The store, located at 4939 Elm St. in the Shoppes of Bethesda, is closed as of Friday, January 2, 2025, and sent an email thanking customers for their loyalty. Nearby Chip City locations in Northern Virginia remain open.

The Bethesda shop opened in November 2023, replacing Fancy Cakes by Leslie, which closed in October 2022. At the time, the arrival of Chip City generated significant buzz, with long lines, strong social media interest, and influencers documenting their visits during the opening weeks.

Chip City began as a side hustle five years ago for founders Theodore Gailas and Peter Phillips before rapidly expanding throughout New York and surrounding areas. The brand grew to more than a dozen locations and announced aggressive expansion plans beyond the Northeast. According to Forbes, that growth was backed in part by a $10 million investment from Shake Shack founder Danny Meyer.

The Bethesda location offered Chip City’s rotating weekly cookie menu, featuring up to 18 flavors at a time. The lineup mixed core favorites such as chocolate chip and dairy-free chocolate chip with rotating options like blueberry cheesecake, peanut butter and jelly, Nutella sea salt, and seasonal specialties tied to holidays and events.
