After Historic Football Season at Kennedy, Jacquis McCray Takes Over at Walter Johnson

Walter Johnson High School has named Jacquis McCray as its new head varsity football coach, ushering in a new era for the Wildcats program.

The school announced McCray’s hiring this week, citing his extensive high school and collegiate coaching experience and his commitment to developing student-athletes both on and off the field. His leadership philosophy emphasizes accountability, competitive excellence, and student-centered growth, aligning with Walter Johnson’s mission of academic and athletic success.

McCray comes to Walter Johnson following a standout season at his alma mater, John F. Kennedy High School in Silver Spring, where he led the Cavaliers to their first winning season in 19 years. Kennedy finished the regular season 5-4, marking a significant milestone for the program under McCray’s leadership.

“We are excited to welcome Coach McCray to the Wildcat family,” Athletic Director Larry Hurd Jr. said in the school’s announcement. “His vision and passion for developing young people make him an outstanding fit for our program.”

In December, we reported that Walter Johnson High School had begun the search for its next varsity football coach following the departure of Aaron Fiddler, who stepped away from the role after three seasons. Fiddler remains a teacher at the school and leaves behind a program that made notable cultural and developmental progress during his tenure. The school previously expressed gratitude for his dedication, highlighting his work ethic, mentorship, and the strong relationships he built with student-athletes both on and off the field.
