Man Killed in Thursday Night Shooting

Updated to reflect that shooting is now being investigated as a homicide.

Montgomery County Police are investigating a shooting reported Thursday evening in Silver Spring (Fairland).

According to MCPD, officers were dispatched at approximately 7:45 p.m. to the 3000 block of Briggs Chaney Road for a report of a shooting. Police located a male victim suffering from trauma to the body at the scene.

No suspect is in custody at this time. Police said the investigation is ongoing and that additional information will be released when it becomes available.

Additional Update: Montgomery County Police are investigating a homicide following a fatal shooting Thursday night on Briggs Chaney Road in Fairland.

According to MCPD, 3rd District officers and Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services were dispatched at approximately 7:45 p.m. on Thursday, January 8, 2026, to the 3000 block of Briggs Chaney Road for a report of a shooting. When officers arrived, they located an adult male in the roadway near the Exxon gas station suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.

Life-saving measures were provided at the scene, but the victim was later pronounced dead. At this time, no suspect is in custody. Police said the decedent will be transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, where an autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause and manner of death.

MCPD said the investigation remains active and ongoing. A formal news release will be issued once additional information becomes available, including the identity of the victim, following proper notification of next of kin.
