Maryland Staple Not Closing Just Yet With Sale “in Limbo”

Earlier this week, the Starvin Marvin’s Pizzeria & Grille (6942 Crestwood Blvd.) shared an update on social media clarifying that the previously announced sale of the business is currently on hold. According to the owners, the deal is now “in limbo” due to circumstances beyond their control, but the Frederick store remains open and operating.

“Due to circumstances beyond our control the sale is in limbo. BUT, the great news is for Frederick is that we are still here!!!” the post read. The owners encouraged customers to continue supporting the restaurant, noting their ongoing commitment to local schools, churches, and youth organizations throughout Frederick.

The update follows a November announcement in which Starvin Marvin’s in Frederick said it would close after 38 years in business. In that emotional message, titled “The End of Our Era,” the owners explained they were ready to step away from the pizza business after nearly four decades and expected the Frederick location to be sold in mid December to make way for a new pizzeria concept.

Starvin Marvin’s has deep roots in Montgomery and Frederick counties. The original location opened in Gaithersburg in 1982 and was purchased by the Foundas family in 1987. A Wheaton location followed in 1990 but later closed, while the Gaithersburg restaurant remained a community staple for decades. In 2009, the family opened the Frederick location, which became their sole restaurant in 2012 when the Gaithersburg store was sold to two longtime employees. The Gaithersburg location continues to operate independently.

In their earlier closure announcement, the owners reflected on generations of families who grew up dining at Starvin Marvin’s, school and corporate catering events, and pizza-eating contests during Frederick’s Fourth of July celebrations. Many staff members over the years were family or close friends, and community support has long been central to the business, particularly through donations and discounts for schools, churches, and youth sports.

For now, Starvin Marvin’s remains open in Frederick as the future of the sale remains uncertain. The owners urged the community to keep stopping by and supporting the restaurant as they continue serving customers and giving back locally.
