Montgomery County Public Libraries announced a change to Sunday service that will take effect starting Jan. 11, 2026, reducing the number of branches open on Sundays as part of what MCPL says is an effort to ensure consistent staffing, sustainable operations, and enhanced programming for the community.
Under the new schedule, the following nine branches will continue to operate on Sundays from 10am to 6pm:
• Brigadier General Charles E. McGee Library (Silver Spring)
• Connie Morella Library (Bethesda)
• Gaithersburg Library
• Germantown Library
• Long Branch Library
• Olney Library
• Rockville Memorial Library
• Wheaton Library
• White Oak Library
Library officials say the more focused Sunday schedule will allow MCPL to provide more robust programming, including reading events for children, activities for teens, and other special community programs. Each geographic area of Montgomery County will continue to have at least one library branch open on Sundays, with increased staffing at those locations.
MCPL leaders emphasized that accessibility remains a priority, particularly for older adults and other residents who rely on Sunday hours, while balancing operational needs across the system.
“Montgomery County Public Libraries remains committed to providing exceptional service to our residents,” said MCPL Director Darcell Graham. “The adjustment to Sunday service hours is part of our ongoing efforts to enhance efficiency and ensure we continue meeting the evolving needs of the community. We appreciate the public’s continued support and welcome feedback as we move through this transition.”
To help serve communities where library branches will be closed on Sundays, MCPL’s electric outreach van will offer select services. The van includes deployable shelving that allows customers to browse materials, manage their library accounts, and return borrowed items.
