US-29 Closed in Both Directions After Driver Strikes and Kills Pedestrian

Updated to reflect adult woman was struck and killed by hit and run driver.

Montgomery County Police 3rd District officers were dispatched at 6:39pm, to the intersection of Columbia Pike and Fairland Road in Silver Spring (Fairland) for a traffic collision that has killed an adult female pedestrian.

Columbia Pike is currently shut down at Fairland Road. Alert Montgomery reports that both northbound and southbound US-29 (Columbia Pike) are closed between Musgrove Road and Briggs Chaney Road. Significant delays are expected in the area. Drivers are urged to avoid the area and use alternate routes.

MCPD Update: Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – Collision Reconstruction Unit are investigating a fatal hit-and-run collision involving a pedestrian that occurred on Monday, January 12, 2026, near the intersection of Columbia Pike (Route 29) and Fairland Road in Silver Spring/Fairland. Detectives are asking for the public’s assistance in identifying the vehicles involved.

Per MCPD: “At approximately 6:39 p.m., 3rd District officers and Fire Rescue personnel responded to the area for the report of a pedestrian struck. The investigation has revealed that an adult female was hit multiple times in the roadway by the drivers of at least two separate vehicles.

The two vehicles believed to be involved are described as a maroon Toyota Tacoma, model years between 2016–2023, and an older-model orange Ford Crown Victoria. Both vehicles left the scene after the collision. The pedestrian, a 73-year-old woman, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Additional information, including the name of the decedent, will be released following proper notification of next of kin. Anyone with information regarding this hit-and-run collision is asked to contact the Montgomery County Police Collision Reconstruction Unit at 240-773-6620.”
