MD 28 Bridge Near Montgomery-Frederick Line Closing Jan. 17–18

The MD 28 (Dickerson Road) bridge over the Monocacy River will be temporarily closed next weekend for repairs, impacting drivers who travel between southern Frederick County and northern Montgomery County.

According to the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration, the bridge will be closed beginning at 6 a.m. on Saturday, January 17, to allow crews to replace damaged sections of overhead steel. The repairs stem from a crash in October 2024, when a large truck struck and damaged the bridge.

The bridge, located just north of the Montgomery County line in Frederick County and south of Park Mills Road, is scheduled to reopen by 5pm on Sunday, January 18, weather permitting. During the closure, no vehicles will be allowed to cross the bridge, including emergency vehicles, due to the presence of an onsite crane. MDOT says local emergency services have been notified in advance.

A detour will be in place for all traffic. Westbound MD 28 drivers will be directed to MD 85 (Buckeystown Pike), then MD 80 (Fingerboard Road), to I-270, and then MD 109 to reconnect with MD 28. Eastbound drivers will follow the same detour route in reverse.

Drivers are encouraged to plan ahead and allow extra travel time, especially those who regularly commute between Montgomery and Frederick counties using the MD 28 corridor.
