Arson-Damaged Greenbriar Playground Restored and Reopened in Potomac

Montgomery Parks has reopened the playground at Greenbriar Local Park in Potomac, nearly two years after it was destroyed in an arson fire.

The playground at 12525 Glen Road was intentionally set on fire on May 7, 2024, according to Montgomery County fire investigators. The blaze caused an estimated $1 million in damage and left the popular neighborhood play area unusable for 20 months.

“The fire at Greenbriar Local Park was a devastating blow,” said Miti Figueredo, director of Montgomery Parks. “To restore this important community amenity, we had to reallocate existing capital funds that would have gone to other playground projects and make room in the Parks Department’s very full development program. We are relieved that the work is now complete and we can welcome families back.”

The rebuilt playground closely mirrors the original design. The new structure includes slides, a climbing feature, and a multi-level fort intended to encourage active and imaginative play for children ages 5 to 12.

The arson investigation remains open. Authorities are still seeking suspects and are asking anyone with information to contact the Montgomery County Arson Tip Line at 240-777-2263.
