Police Arrest 18 Year Old in Connection With January 8 Homicide

An 18 year old has been arrested and charged in connection with a fatal shooting that occurred earlier this month in Silver Spring, according to the Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD).

Officers assigned to the U.S. Marshals Task Force arrested Yoel Christ Tie on Thursday, January 22, 2026. Police identified Tie as a suspect in the January 8 homicide that occurred in the 3000 block of Briggs Chaney Road.

At approximately 7:45 pm on January 8, officers from the Montgomery County Police Department and Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service responded to reports of a shooting. Officers located 43 year old Gavin St. Aubyn Boothe of Beltsville in the roadway suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite lifesaving efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Detectives with the department’s Major Crimes Division obtained surveillance video showing Boothe exchanging words with two unidentified males shortly before the shooting. Investigators say Boothe was shot moments later.

The Maryland Office of the Chief Medical Examiner determined that Boothe died from multiple gunshot wounds and ruled the death a homicide.

During the investigation, detectives identified Tie as one of the individuals captured on surveillance video. An arrest warrant was obtained on January 22 charging him with second degree murder and felony use of a firearm during a violent crime. Tie was taken into custody later that day at his apartment in Gaithersburg.

Police said Friday that Major Crimes detectives are no longer searching for a second suspect.

Tie is currently being held at the Montgomery County Central Processing Unit pending a bond hearing scheduled for January 26.
