State Probe Continues Into Montgomery County Death After Police Custody, MCPD Says

The Maryland Attorney General’s Office has identified the man who died following a police response in Silver Spring last month, along with the Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD) officers involved, as an independent investigation into the incident continues. MCPD had issued a statement in response to the AG’s office investigation.

According to the Office of the Attorney General’s Independent Investigations Division, the decedent was identified as 31-year-old Jamal Thompson of Silver Spring. The incident occurred on Monday, December 15, 2025, when Thompson was taken into custody by Montgomery County police officers and transported to a hospital, where he later died after experiencing a medical crisis.

The Attorney General’s office released the name of the officers involved with taking Thompson into custody. They were identified as Officer Kevin Argueta, a 15-year veteran; Officer Kyle Conley, a six-year veteran; Officer Rebecca Davis, a six-year veteran; Officer Rachel Hopko, a 10-year veteran; Officer Kimorra Maier, a three-year veteran; Officer Maxie Weisz, an 11-year veteran; and Officer Colin Staszewski, a one-year veteran. All are assigned to the Patrol Division.

The Independent Investigations Division continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding Thompson’s release-from-custody incident. Investigators are asking anyone with information, including cell phone video or private surveillance footage, to come forward.

Officials confirmed that the officers on scene were equipped with body-worn cameras, which recorded the incident. The division generally releases body-worn camera footage within 20 business days, though delays can occur to allow investigators to complete witness interviews, address technical issues such as redacting civilian identities, or provide family members an opportunity to view the footage prior to public release.

In a separate statement, the Montgomery County Department of Police said officers responded to a call involving a person in crisis on December 15, 2025. Thompson was transported by ambulance to a hospital under an emergency evaluation petition. Several hours later, police said he died following a medical crisis.

Police officials emphasized that under Maryland law, the Independent Investigations Division is the lead agency in the case and is responsible for releasing information related to the investigation, including the identities of the officers involved. The department said it is fully cooperating with the investigation and will not provide additional comment until the inquiry is complete.
