Winter Storm Forces Schools and Offices to Close for Two Days

Montgomery County Public Schools will be closed for both students and staff for two consecutive days as winter weather continues to impact the region. MCPS announced it is operating under CODE RED, meaning all schools and offices will be closed on Monday, January 26, and Tuesday, January 27.

The decision comes as snow and ice removal efforts continue across the county and conditions remain unsafe for normal operations. District officials cited ongoing inclement weather and the amount of time needed to fully clear roads, parking lots, and walkways as key factors in the closure.

Under the CODE RED status, all MCPS schools and offices will be closed on both days. Emergency personnel are expected to report as directed. All school-based activities, including field trips, after-school programs, athletic practices, and games, are canceled. Childcare programs and community use of school facilities are also canceled. Any staff training scheduled for Monday or Tuesday will be canceled or rescheduled for a later date.

MCPS indicated that additional information regarding grading deadlines and grade reporting will be shared later this week, addressing questions tied to the end of the marking period and the impact of the extended closure. The school system plans to provide an update on Wednesday’s operational status on Tuesday at 4pm.
