A ruptured sprinkler pipe caused significant water damage Friday at the Alexander House apartment building at 8560 Second Avenue in Silver Spring, displacing residents and impacting building systems.
According to Chief Spokesperson for Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) Pete Piringer, the rupture occurred on the 17th floor, sending water down through the building to the basement and affecting electrical utility service. At least 166 residential units have been displaced, and officials said the number could increase as assessments continue. MCFRS is supporting the Office of Emergency Management and Homeland Security, the Department of Housing and Community Affairs, the Housing Opportunities Commission, the Department of Health and Human Services, and the Department of Permitting Services as response efforts continue.
We will provide an update if additional verified information becomes available.
